{"id":786,"date":"2010-10-10T22:05:41","date_gmt":"2010-10-10T14:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/?p=786"},"modified":"2010-10-10T22:05:41","modified_gmt":"2010-10-10T14:05:41","slug":"october-holiday-part-ii-bactrian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/?p=786","title":{"rendered":"October Holiday &#8211; Part II (Bactrian)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part Two of October Holiday 2010 was a camel ride in the Tenggeli Desert, Ningxia Province.\u00a0 We began on Monday afternoon riding deep into the desert. (Actually, I&#8217;m pretty sure our guides led us in circles. When we commented about this, they laughed!)\u00a0 We rode for a couple of hours, set up camp, looked for firewood (which proved easier than we thought it would be), and rested for the evening.\u00a0 We sang hymns and other songs around the campfire while our guides played a drinking game.\u00a0 (The second night was awesome because the guides tried to sing along with us!)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of the camel trip:\u00a0 Watching the sunset and sunrise in the desert, seeing all of the stars at night, blue skies all day, squatting in the cleanest, freshest bathroom I&#8217;ve ever been in (there&#8217;s just something about the open air breeze and sun smiling down on you. Honestly, the first bathroom I used when I got back was the bus station bathroom and let me tell you&#8230;I prefer the desert), \ud83d\ude42 sleeping by the fire, fellowship and fun with other FOCers, and marveling at the beauty of HIS creation both fauna and flora.\u00a0 Riding the camels was also a highlight, but that&#8217;s assumed! \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 Below are some of the better pictures that I took on the trip.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_788\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9085SaturationContrast.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-788\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-788 \" title=\"IMG_9085SaturationContrast\" src=\"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9085SaturationContrast-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9085SaturationContrast-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9085SaturationContrast-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This was really the color of the desert sand. It was so beautiful there. It wasn&#39;t too hot. It got a bit cold at night. Not a view I will soon forget!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I wondered a lot how long it took for the\u00a0wind to blow the footprints out of the sand.\u00a0 We created a\u00a0lot of footprints but somehow the sand ended\u00a0up like this again.\u00a0 \u00a0If it wasn&#8217;t for the power lines here and there, it would have seemed like I was a million miles away from civilization.\u00a0 It was awesome!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_789\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9121Contrast.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-789\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-789 \" title=\"IMG_9121Contrast\" src=\"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9121Contrast-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9121Contrast-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9121Contrast-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-789\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When I take pictures of things I like to take things from a wide perspective and also up close. Although we weren&#39;t on the camels for a terribly long time each day, they did carry us up and down dunes with ease and skill. I was a little nervous a couple of times when my camel would run down the dunes. As the trip went on, the nerves calmed and going down hills was actually pretty fun!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was fun to watch the camels.\u00a0 The way they eat. They way the chew. The way the walk. They way they &#8216;smile.&#8217; Their feet. Everything about them is so funny. A different kind of cute than the pandas. They were also so funny.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This camel&#8217;s name was Xiao Bai \u5c0f\u767d.\u00a0 It means &#8220;little white&#8221;.\u00a0 He wasn&#8217;t so little (or white for that matter) but he was whiter than the rest of them.\u00a0 He was sort of the &#8220;drama queen&#8221; camel.\u00a0\u00a0So much so, that the camel driver let the person riding him go on his own with him just because he had a hard time being in a group of camels!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_793\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9103CropContrast.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-793\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-793  \" title=\"IMG_9103CropContrast\" src=\"http:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9103CropContrast-1024x812.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9103CropContrast-1024x812.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/amber.schlomer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_9103CropContrast-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I also found this guy while I was wandering in the desert. We saw tons of little tracks in the sand. (When I say little, I mean smaller than a camel print or a human print.) The small tracks belonged to various bugs, these little guys, and--according to the guides--foxes. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t that big. Yes, both sets. I didn&#39;t get up for the sunrise on the first day. The sun rose much later here than in Beijing because of the lack of timezones. China is all one timezone. And it all revolves around the capital. \ud83d\ude42<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another one of HIS beautiful gifts to us! It seemed extra beautiful in the desert.\u00a0 Maybe because I was able to see the blue skies all the time and didn&#8217;t have to worry about smog and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>There were many other great photos.
